So what's the story behind the funky little store with the funny little name?
Woollen Candle was started by a musician named Michael Carpenter around 2005 or so. Mike discovered Cafepress, which is a neat company that prints and sells t-shirts with original designs. He quickly set up a few simple stores, and Woollen Candle was born.
The site caters to people like Mike, who write, play and record their own music. He sat down and came up with some ideas that might appeal to people who know a preamp from a power amp, or a multitrack recorder from a multi-FX unit.
The name 'Woollen Candle' comes from an in-joke between Mike and his wife. They like to toss around non sequitors from time to time, and one day the idea of a woollen candle came up; "Ooh, now it's a big fire!" said Mike, referring to the idea of a candle made of wool just going up in flames. When the store came along, it was a wacky enough name to fit perfectly.
And if you're wondering what a woollen candle has to do with home recording studio clothing, remember that once, people wondered what a company called 'Google' had to do with searching the Internet. From such humble beginnings...
